Importance of the Decanter and Wine Enthusiast Awards in the world of wine

The Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the most prestigious and competitive wine competitions in the world, where each wine submitted is subjected to a rigorous evaluation by renowned critics and sommeliers. Obtaining a silver medal with 90 points in this competition confirms the exceptional quality of our Altos de Luzón 2021 and highlights the potential of the Jumilla region to produce world-class wines. This recognition reinforces our mission at Bodegas Luzón to take the authenticity of our wines beyond Spain’s borders.

Wine Enthusiast is one of the most influential publications in the US market and a benchmark in the wine industry. The score of 91 points awarded to Altos de Luzón 2021 highlights our wine as a recommended choice, especially in the demanding US market. This type of rating is an endorsement of quality that consolidates our Monastrell on the global scene and allows Jumilla and our wines to have greater visibility and appreciation in highly relevant markets.

Altos de Luzon 2021: The spirit of Jumilla and Monastrell

With the Altos de Luzón 2021 vintage, we pay tribute to the essence of the land of Jumilla, a region characterised by an extreme climate, rough soils and an average altitude of 650 metres above sea level. It is in this land of contrasts that the Monastrell variety finds its maximum expression and develops a complexity that only the terroir of Jumilla can offer.

Altos de Luzón 2021 is made exclusively from Monastrell grapes. The grapes are harvested by hand, picking each bunch in small boxes of 10 to 15 kg to preserve the quality of the fruit. This is a process that ensures that each grape arrives intact at the winery, where they spend 24 hours in cold storage at 6ºC before vinification, thus preserving the freshness and intensity of the aromas. Afterwards, on the selection table, we choose the best grapes for vatting, starting a meticulous and careful vinification.

The fermentation of Altos de Luzón 2021 takes 8 to 10 days at controlled temperatures between 24 and 26ºC, with a maceration in contact with the skins that lasts between 10 and 15 days. This wine culminates its elaboration process with an ageing of 12 months in American and French oak barrels, which gives it an elegant structure and a particular aromatic richness that is distinctive of our Altos de Luzón.
