Bodegas Luzón among the elite of Spanish wines according to Tim Atkin
The news that Tim Atkin, one of the world’s most influential wine critics, has awarded high scores to two of our wines in his recent ‘Discover Spain’ report fills us with deep joy and enormous satisfaction. This international recognition not only validates our work and passion for viticulture, but also reinforces our mission to bring the best of Jumilla to the most demanding palates.
Who is Tim Atkin?
For those who are not familiar with the world of wine critics, it is necessary to highlight the figure of Tim Atkin. Atkin is a British Master of Wine with more than 30 years of experience in the sector. His name is synonymous with rigour, experience and in-depth knowledge of wines from all over the world. He has written for renowned publications such as Harpers, Decanter, The World of Fine Wine and The Drinks Business and has been a judge at numerous international competitions.
Tim Atkin is not just a wine critic; he is an authority whose judgement can catapult a wine to stardom or, in some cases, be a wake-up call for improvement. His approach is always detailed and thorough, which means that every score he awards is backed up by a thorough tasting and a deep understanding of the wine and its origins.
The ‘Discover Spain’ report
Tim Atkin’s reports are one of the most eagerly awaited documents each year by wineries, appellations, distributors and wine lovers around the world. On this occasion, Atkin, together with renowned wine writer Beth Willard, has toured Spain’s main wine regions, tasted hundreds of wines and offered his assessment in the form of detailed scores and comments. This report is much more than a list of outstanding wines; it is an X-ray of the current Spanish wine scene, highlighting trends, recognising the efforts of the wineries and identifying the hidden gems of each region.
For Bodegas Luzón, being part of this select group of wines that Tim Atkin considers among the best in Spain is an immense honour. It confirms that our work in the Jumilla PDO, with its particular terroir and climatic conditions, is bearing fruit of great quality and international recognition.
Our ratings in ‘Discover Spain’
This year, Tim Atkin has recognised the excellence of two of our wines with outstanding scores in his report:
– 91 points for POR TÍ 2020
– 90 points for FINCA LUZÓN SIN SULFITOS 2023
These scores are a reflection of the care, dedication and innovation we put into every stage of production. For those few who are not yet familiar with them, allow us to make a brief presentation of these two wines that have captured the attention and palate of one of the world’s most respected critics.
POR TÍ 2020: Tradition and modernity in one bottle
Por Tí 2020 is a blend, 80% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, born from the combination of our winemaking tradition with a modern and innovative approach. This red wine, made from carefully selected grapes, reflects the distinctive character of the Jumilla PDO. Its careful winemaking process gives it an aromatic complexity that manifests itself in notes of ripe red fruits, spices and a subtle touch of toasted wood.
The score of 91 points awarded by Tim Atkin is a recognition of the perfect balance between its structure and freshness, its ageing capacity and its persistence in the mouth. Por Tí 2020 is a wine designed to be enjoyed on special occasions, but it is also a tribute to the next generations and above all to our ancestors, who started this path that today leads us to be recognised internationally.
FINCA LUZÓN SIN SULFITOS 2023: Purity and sustainability
On the other hand, Finca Luzón Sin Sulfitos 2023 represents our commitment to sustainability and the production of more natural wines. This vegan wine is produced without the addition of sulphites, which makes it an ideal option for those consumers who are looking for more natural and less intervened products.
Made with grapes from selected vineyards, 100% Monastrell from certified organic farming, Finca Luzón Sin Sulfitos 2023 stands out for its purity and genuine expression of the terroir. Its fresh and fruity notes, combined with a balanced acidity, make it a vibrant and authentic wine. Tim Atkin’s score of 90 points underlines its exceptional quality and motivates us to continue exploring new ways of winemaking that respect the environment and the characteristics of our grapes.
A bright future for Bodegas Luzón
This recognition in the ‘Discover Spain’ report is not only a cause for celebration for us at Bodegas Luzón, but also a stimulus to continue improving and offering our customers the best of our land. We will continue to work with the same passion and dedication that has brought us this far, convinced that the future of Spanish wine is bright and that, from our winery, we will continue to contribute to it.
We would like to thank all those who have been part of this journey, from our winemakers to our customers and friends. This success is shared, and every glass of Por Tí 2020 or Finca Luzón Sin Sulfitos 2023 that is enjoyed around the world carries a little piece of our history and our effort.
