With these two new wines we present a clear plea to our memory, going beyond our roots, past and those 11,457 km that were traveled in 1841 when the founder of the winery, Don José Molina, commander of the Royal Armies and stationed on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, decided to return to his native Jumilla after finishing his military career, commander of the Royal Armies and stationed on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, decided to return to his native Jumilla after finishing his military career, taking charge of the family lands which he named “Finca Luzon”, in honor of the island where he was stationed for so long.
Since then and after a curious and unusual line of inheritance between the women of the family, in 2005 our winery passed into the hands of the Fuertes family, who turned to the task of modernizing Bodegas Luzon, managing to build a reference winery in the P.D.O. Jumilla respecting the original structure, thus managing to combine modernity and history in a perfect match between tradition and innovation.
This fresh and innovative spirit has meant that although our historical objective has been to promote Monastrell, the native variety of the Jumilla P.D.O., when making the new ‘Origen de Luzón’ range, our winemaker, Vicente Mico, has decided to use foreign varieties which, due to their popularity in the area, have come to be considered as native and autochthonous to the appellation. Hence our commitment to Mediterranean varieties that are fully adapted to the environment of Jumilla, such as Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah, which after many years are already part of its landscape, its colors and its wines.
Thus, ‘Origen de Luzón’ is composed of a 100% Garnacha tintorera with a strong character enhanced by its 8 months in oak barrels. A red wine of deep cherry red color and high intensity, with an expressive, intense and complex nose, with aromas reminiscent of black fruits (such as blackberries and cherries), licorice and menthol touches. The palate is pleasant, round, concentrated, with ripe, well-structured tannins. A wine with good volume and a long, persistent finish.
This is joined by a 100% Syrah, of great concentration and aromatic intensity, with 6 months of barrel aging, deep ruby red color, where the aromas of blackberry, blueberries, rose petals and violets are complemented by herbaceous and spicy notes along with soft notes of oak and cocoa. A fresh, concentrated and very mineral Syrah with fine tannins and a perfectly balanced finish.
With these two new additions to the great family of wines of Bodegas Luzon, we continue to value our history to produce wines that have been, and are, recognized and praised all over the world by critics and the public, and that are also committed to the values of sustainability and ecology.
