Christmas comes and the pantries of the houses are filled with typical sweets. Nougat, marzipan, polvorones, roscones… and yes, the pairings for Christmas sweets have evolved beyond champagnes, cavas and sparkling wines.

Here we are going to give you some recommendations so that you can surprise your guests with surprising pairings and accompaniments.

Turrón (Nougat)

There are many types of nougat. The ‘hard’ one, the ‘soft’ one, the toasted yolk… but we also have pralines, with all the chocolate nougats and various fantasies.

The first, the best known and most common, is the traditional nougat, the ‘hard’ almond nougat. It is a tremendously sweet dessert and is more complex to pair. A good pairing would be the choice of a sweet wine, such as our Luzón Dulce, a fun and surprising irreverent wine, made from Sauvignon Blanc, whose notes of honey, quince, vanilla and caramel, will perfectly accompany traditional nougat. The same happens with the Jijona style soft nougats, which are made with almonds, honey, sugar and egg white, and therefore combine especially well also with our Luzón Dulce, as they complement each other due to the dense and sweet texture of both.

Toasted yolk nougat stands out for its high percentage of almonds and yolk topped with a thin layer of burnt sugar that gives it a crunchy touch and a toasted aroma and flavor. This is the characteristic that we will take advantage of to pair with the perfect wine. For our taste, we would pair this turrón with our Mina de Oro, a 100% Viognier barrel-fermented white, tremendously aromatic, with floral notes that stand out above a complexity of aromas reminiscent of pineapple, honey or banana, with an unctuous, creamy mouth and notes of cereal along with white fruit with a touch of ripeness.

If chocolate is your thing, you will love all the nougats and pralines in which chocolate stands out in their composition. The higher the percentage of cocoa, the easier it will be to pair with wines of greater body and intensity. Our recommendation is Alma, a blend of Monastrell and Syrah with expressive and intense aromas and succulent mouthfeel, with a balanced freshness of great character and typicity.

Marzipan

Creamy almond bites, if you eat more than one, it is better to accompany them with wine to make them less heavy. And here comes when we want to surprise you. We propose a white wine, our Luzón Colección Blanco. An aromatic white with aromas of green apple, intermingled with citrus and tropical fruit and a smooth mouthfeel, with a balanced acidity and persistent finish that will help to clean and refresh the mouth after eating marzipan.

Polvorones and mantecados

Polvorones are a sweet that we like, but it is difficult to swallow because of its ‘dryness’. So that they do not get stuck, we can accompany them with a glass of wine. These sweets can be accompanied by dry and fruity young reds, although our choice will be Por Tí, a coupage of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon, expressive, with aromas of ripe fruit, spicy, fine cocoa, blackberry, roasted new oak, with character, complex. A wine that will reinforce the not too sweet taste of the polvorón and will bring juiciness in a harmonious way, leaving a pleasant sensation in the mouth.

Roscón de Reyes  (Three Kings Cake)

Buns flavored with orange blossom water, candied fruits and cream, lots of cream. This is the most common type of roscón. There are many variations, without cream, with cream, cream-cream, truffle… but we will focus on the classic with cream. The cream and butter will impregnate our taste buds with that lactic and fatty sensation that will be ideal to clean with a wine that has a clean and balanced acidity. Our selection, somewhat different from what is expected, will be an Altos, a Monastrell with expressive and intense aromas, with notes of red and black fruits, sweet spices and soft smoky notes from the aging, with a frank mouth and lively freshness supported by its fruity character.

Panettone

It is a newcomer to the ‘Christmas sweets’ team, but it has quickly taken its place in our homes.

This typical brioche bun, accompanied by raisins and other dried fruits, will go perfectly with our Luzón Colección Rosado. An expressive rosé made from Monastrell well balanced with a refreshing acidity, medium body and delicate texture and a sweet and refreshing finish, which will accompany every bite of panettone refreshing our mouth.
