Wine is a beverage that has captivated mankind for centuries, offering a wide range of flavors and aromas that delight our senses. However, there is a key factor that often goes unnoticed but plays a fundamental role in the experience of enjoying a good wine: the serving temperature.

The Right Temperature: Why is it so important?

Serving wine at the right temperature is essential to bring out its characteristics and allow it to express itself fully. Temperature directly affects the flavor, aroma and structure of the wine, so its impact on the tasting experience should not be underestimated.

What does the serving temperature of a wine affect?

1.- Flavors and aromas

Temperature is one of the factors that most affects the perception of flavors and aromas in wine. If served too cold, flavors become more subtle, ethereal and less pronounced, while if served too warm, flavors can seem unbalanced, alcoholic and volatile. The optimal temperature allows the aromas first, and the flavors later, to unfold gradually at first before our nose and to conclude on the palate, revealing subtle and complex layers that might otherwise go unnoticed.

2.- Structure and Texture

Temperature also influences the structure and texture of the wine. In general, red wines tend to be served at a slightly higher temperature than whites and sparkling wines. This is because heat brings out the tannins in reds, softening their astringent character and allowing more complex flavors to develop. On the other hand, whites and sparkling wines benefit from cooler temperatures, as this enhances their freshness and acidity, keeping them lively and playful on the palate.

Wine service tips

Knowing the importance of providing an exceptional tasting experience, we bring you some practical tips for serving wine at the optimal temperature:

    • Young whites and rosés: Young whites and rosés, which maintain their acidity and lively expression, are best served between 6 and 8 °C, for which we recommend refrigerating them for a few hours before serving. A more than perfect temperature for our Luzón Colección Blanco, a fresh and very fruity wine, which can be served at up to 4ºC on those evenings when you want to enjoy a cool glass. At this temperature, you can also serve our Tomás Ferro, a temperature that enhances its citric character with saline notes. And within this group, do not forget our Luzón Colección Rosado, a fresh rosé, ideal for summer evenings.

    • Very sweet whites: These wines have an optimum serving temperature of 8ºC to 10ºC, at which temperature we can capture all their nuances. In our case,  Luzón Dulce is a Sauvignon Blanc aged in French oak barrels for 8-10 months, whose perfect serving temperature can even reach 6ºC, to enjoy it as a dessert glass after a summer meal.
    • Crianza whites: Crianza whites are surprising wines, due to their body, fatty texture and smoothness. Tasting is recommended between 10ºC and 12ºC if you want to perceive all the complexity of its nuances, although if you want to drink our Mina de Oro, a peculiar oaked Viognier, you can do it at 6-8ºC, to enjoy it without complexes.
    • Young red wines: The ideal temperature for young red wines, which maintain all the aroma of the fruit and verve of youth, is approximately 14-16 °C. This would be the case of our Luzón Colección Monastrell, a young single varietal red wine, from different vineyards where the altitude and soil type give it its marked character.
    • Barrel-aged reds: The more structured and aged reds can benefit from a slightly higher temperature, between 16-18 °C, although with these summer heat, you can go as low as 14 °C. In this temperature range, you can serve our Luzón Colección Roble, or some of our most iconic wines such as Por Tí, Alma de Luzón and Altos de Luzón.

At Bodegas Luzón, we recognize the importance of temperature in the service of wines and we believe that a perfect tasting experience begins with serving the wine at the optimal temperature, which allows its flavors, aromas and structure to be fully expressed, although ultimately, the ideal temperature will be the one that each of us choose, don’t you think?
