The origin of this day, like most of the inventions that incite consumerism, comes from the USA and is celebrated every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, which coincides with the fourth Thursday of November and marks the start of the Christmas holidays on the other side of the Atlantic. During this day, stores, whether physical or virtual, offer great deals and juicy promotions in order to attract customers eager to get real bargains that will solve some of their Christmas gifts.
All this is very clear to us. What is not so clear is the origin of this day and there are several theories about it. To know the most possible origin among all of them, we have to travel in the mid 50’s, in the city of Philadelphia, where there was a great collapse in the stores on the Friday after Thanksgiving, since everyone wanted to do their Christmas shopping that day so as not to miss a soccer game between the army and the navy on Saturday.
Due to the huge crowds and tides of people invading the streets and crowding the stores, the city’s police force had to work endless days without being able to take the day off to watch the famous game and began to use the term ‘Black Friday’, a term that caught on with the city’s merchants, who used it to describe the hordes of people who flocked to the city’s stores the day after Thanksgiving in the years that followed.
But to establish the term and make it world famous, several years had to pass… Exactly, until 1975, when the famous The New York Times used this expression to refer to the traffic problems that were generated in New York City as a result of the post-Thanksgiving day discounts.
And from then on, its popularity was unstoppable. The combination of substantial sales together with the desire to make Christmas shopping, have made the ‘Black Friday’ does not stop gaining followers. But… How did it arrive in Spain?
There were a couple of pioneers here. In 2010, Apple and in 2012, the MediaMarkt chain launched Black Friday campaigns that, a priori, did not seem to work… until 2013, when El Corte Inglés, Amazon and other largecompanies launched their own campaigns. Since then, large retailers and stores have launched this hurricane of discounts, sales and offers.
